Michael Petrillose named Dean of The Hospitality College at Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Aug. 28, 2012 — Michael J. Petrillose, Ph.D., has been appointed the dean of The Hospitality College at Johnson & Wales University Providence Campus (JWU).

He follows Dean Richard Brush, who retired in June and will remain at the university for the next year as dean of special projects.

For the past six years, Dr. Petrillose was dean of the Business and Hospitality Division at State University of New York (SUNY) at Delhi where he managed faculty and the campus hospitality center which included two full-service restaurants, one banquet event conference operation, and two suite guestrooms. At JWU as the ranking official of The Hospitality College, Dr. Petrillose is responsible for the content and quality of the academic programs offered, fostering an environment of continual improvement and innovation to maintain excellence in teaching and learning.

Speaking from his new office in the Xavier Academic Center located at JWU's Downcity campus, Dr. Petrillose says, "I'm learning the Johnson & Wales University model, which is highly regarded and successful. In my meetings with faculty and leadership, we will put together a vision for The Hospitality College's future. My job is continuing to build upon the model and ensuring that, globally, our programs continue to be recognized and highly regarded for their excellence as is the work of our outstanding alumni."

Prior to his appointment as dean at SUNY, he was a faculty member at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Las Vegas. Before his academic career, Dr. Petrillose spent more than 20 years in the industry, holding positions as regional vice president of operations for Regis Hotel Corporation and corporate president Neighborhood Inns of Chicago. He was the director of hotel operations at the Continental Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in addition to his experience at several prominent hotel properties, including Mohegan Sun Resorts, Sandals, MGM Grand Hotel & Resort, and the Tropicana. Dr. Petrillose’s academic accomplishments include several publications in the area of customer service, hospitality management issues, grant work, and he has supervised many graduate students' theses and papers.

Dean Petrillose earned his doctorate in Foodservice and Hospitality Management from Kansas State University. He holds a Master in Professional Studies from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration from Cornell and an associate degree in Hotel Restaurant Management from SUNY Delhi.

He is a member of Eta Sigma Delta; Phi Upsilon Omicron; Kappa Omicron Nu; Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE); National Restaurant Association (NRA); Cornell University Ye Hosts Honorary Society; Cornell University Hotel Society, and Hotel Sales Management Association (HSMA).
